Coniston and the wonderful surrounding fell ranges and lakes can be explored along with the nearby River Duddon, immortalised by Wordsworth as one of the most scenic rivers in England. Embraced by this beautiful countryside, Broughton is becoming increasingly popular due to being well located and not far from the busier towns of Ambleside and Windermere. Broughton’s focal point is the Georgian market square with its obelisk erected in 1810 to commemorate the jubilee of King George III. Nearby old stone slabs can still be seen where traders laid out their wares, as can the stocks in which wrongdoers were punished. Bordering the square, the Tourist Information Office is adjacent to some charming restaurants, cafés and excellent traditional pubs, where a welcoming atmosphere, fine foods and real ales can be enjoyed.
