Gale Cottage itself offers plenty of areas to relax and play, but it’s also a perfect home-base for the Whitehall/Montague area providing easy access to Lake Michigan and close proximity to all other points of interest, activities, and conveniences.
If you are looking just to chill, look no further than this peaceful place. Read that vacation novel, while enjoying the cool lake breezes in one of our 6 bedrooms. Take a snooze under the beautiful tree canopy in the outdoor hammock, or on the enclosed porch’s rope swing. Or grab one of the provided beach towels and head to the beach to lounge by the water to enjoy the sunshine, the sound of the lapping waves, and maybe some unhurried conversation.
Everyone will love this spot on White Lake for its gorgeous panoramic view of the blue (not actually white!) waters, which are often remarkably un-crowded. The ever-changing view is so pleasing. It is a delight to see the many types of sailboats glide by and watch the White Lake Yacht Club’s larger sailboats race by on the weekends. The sunsets are beautiful every day of the week!
At night, build a bonfire - have s’mores and tell stories. And don’t forget to stargaze!
Since the whole property is situated on a low grade – it’s easy for your whole group to gather and enjoy each other together. The driveway is flat. And it’s only a few steps down to the large deck where there is seating for 12, and only a few steps further down to the yard, beach, and dock.
Please note that children are very welcome at Gale Cottage and, hopefully, will be quite entertained. At the beach, kids can dig or build castles with our sand toys, swim, float, or use our row boat. The yard has a large swingset and is plenty big for any number of games (badminton and wiffle ball are in the boat house). Inside, there is a small collection of DVDs and in the bunk room, there are toys, books, & games.
Gale Cottage is easy to get to – a short 10 minute drive from US-31. It is 3 hours away from Chicago and Detroit, and 55 minutes from Grand Rapids.
The home is ideally located to enjoy the best of each lake:
White Lake’s warmer, calmer waters for water sports like skiing, tubing, fishing, and swimming (or you can just lounge in one of our inflatables!)
And
Lake Michigan’s immense waters & wonderful beaches with soft sand and waves –
3 miles away via boat (via channel access with its great view of the White River Light Station & Museum)
and car (convenient parking is available at Duck Lake State Park Beach, where you can enjoy Duck Lake, the warm, shallow waters of the channel – a big hit with the kids- and the “big lake”).
When it’s time to eat, you will find everything you need to prepare meals for 12 and serve meals for 24 (who wants to do dishes every day on vacation?), or to call for takeout or delivery (menus from local restaurants are at the cottage).
The cottage will be stocked with some starter supplies such as coffee, filters, sugar, salt, spices, paper goods (towels, tissues, toilet), soap (hand, dish, dishwasher, laundry), garbage bags, propane, roasting sticks, and firewood.
Food, beverages, and extra supplies needed can be purchased nearby. The sister cities of Whitehall and Montague are only 3.5 miles away. Montague Foods has a large selection of high quality groceries, beer, and wine. Check out the World’s Largest Weathervane before going in! Also take advantage of the Farmers Market (and Artisan Market) across the street on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.
If you choose to dine out, there are several great options in the area. One you can’t miss is Montague’s classic Dog ‘n Suds Drive In. Enjoy a real draft root beer and coney dog via car hop service.
For finer dining, try Mylan's or Oh Brothers. Then go to Dairy Treat to satisfy your sweet tooth. Please ask us for additional recommendations. We know where to find the best Michigan Blueberries and Cherries too!

There are many special events throughout the year, such as the Cruz’In Classic Car Show, the Arts and Crafts Festival, and the Wine and Jazz Festival. But, you can easily spend any day just in the walk-able picturesque towns of Whitehall and Montague with its many unique shops and attractive places to get some tasty food and drinks. If you are into beer, stop by the area’s very own craft brewery – Fetch Brewing – in downtown Whitehall!
